Internal Medicine Residency Program
To enhance our teaching of outpatient medicine, in 2010 the residency program added a primary care pathway. Through a competitive selection process, two residents per class are invited to participate in the program, which offers focused teaching in outpatient management and other aspects of primary care.
Residents in the pathway spend 3 months of each year on "Primary Care Block" rotations. During primary care block, the residents have the opportunity for more experience in their own continuity clinic practices in addition to spending time in sub-specialty ambulatory sessions. |

The Primary Care Block also includes Forum, a weekly half-day session in which the residents learn in small group settings. Topics include chronic care management, ambulatory procedures, and practice management. They are taught by physician faculty as well as other healthcare professionals including nurses, pharmacists and physical therapists. The residents also participate in a homeless healthcare curriculum (which includes shelter work) and a leadership seminar guided by the residency program director.
While all of our residents are educated in both inpatient and outpatient internal medicine, the primary care pathway has enabled us to provide additional targeted teaching and career development to residents interested in primary care.
Residents are selected for the pathway after the match and we do not separately match residents specifically for the pathway.
