The primary objective
of the residency program is to teach the requisite clinical skills needed to practice
general psychiatry.
- Traditional biopsychosocial approach
- Active supervision in every rotation
- Rotations through public and private settings so residents can develop skills necessary to provide care to a diverse patient population -- outpatient clinic sites ranging from city-based clinics with large populations of chronically mentally ill patients to suburban sites with working families of diverse economic means
- Both hospitals are teaching sites for medical students. Opportunities to teach students, both informally on rotations and formally by giving lectures
- Psychotherapy begins as a G1 resident with didactic lectures and continues with classes throughout all four years, including a fourth year option of classes at Minnesota Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Clinical therapy opportunities in the G2 and G3 years include a twelve-month continuous therapy rotation for two half days each week, with accompanying 60 to 90 minute hands-on teaching session with faculty and direct observation of resident/patient encounters via closed circuit televideo monitoring. Therapy competencies are measured by written exams, direct observation and audio/video evaluations.
Clinical rotations are completed at:
- Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC)
- Regions Hospital
- HCMC and Regions’ subspecialty psychiatric clinics:
- Regions’ International Clinic; Deaf and Hearing Impaired Clinic
- HCMC’s Women's Mental Health Clinic; Sleep Disorders Clinic; Acute Psychiatric Services (psychiatric emergency room)

- ARIS clinic in St. Paul, Minnesota
- Park Nicollet Clinic in St. Louis Park, Minnesota
- Dr. Ronald Groat’s Private Psychiatry Clinic in Edina, Minnesota
- County Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams
- Dedicated half-day weekly didactic training from hospital and community faculty members: residents are not expected to be on any service and attendance is facilitated at either location by teleconference rooms available at both HCMC and Regions.
- Several seminars throughout the year on topics ranging from spirituality, cross-cultural issues and end-of-life care.
- Twice yearly day-long retreats for all psychiatry residents around areas of interest such as corporate communications, music therapy, yoga, and personal goal setting.
- Weekly conferences for all psychiatry staff include Special Topics, Grand Rounds, and Journal Club. PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents obtain experience by presenting at these events.
