Vaginal Bleed

- History
- Get a full obstetric history including LMP, sexual
history, history of STD’s, and any birth control being used.
- Amount of vaginal bleed in # of tampons or pads used in a
day.
- Last Pap smear.
- Any urinary symptoms.
- Work-up
- pelvic exam – we do GC/Chlamydia amplification during
almost all pelvic examinations, these will come back in 48 hours. ED wet
prep will come back in about 30 minutes. Pelvic examinations need to be
supervised by a senior resident or staff and a nurse needs to be present.
- U/A and UPT. If they have a uterus they need a UPT. If
there is significant bleeding the U/A should be a catheterized specimen and
sent for culture if abnormal or patient symptomatic.
- Pregnant Vaginal Bleed – type needs to be done unless
they have a prior type at HCMC, call the blood bank.
