Nurse Midwife
Certified Nurse Midwives care for women throughout their life, including during pregnancy, labor, and birth. Midwifery practice includes the management of women’s health care, focusing on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, family planning, and the gynecological needs of women.
Are you pregnant? Do you have Medical Assistance? Remember, you have coverage for 12 months after the birth of your baby as long as you live in Minnesota. Find more information on the MN Department of Human Services website.
Nurse-Midwife Service first of its kind in Minnesota
A first for Minnesota: Hennepin Healthcare's Nurse-Midwife Service was the first of its kind in Minnesota, and has been welcoming new babies since 1971! The Midwives see patients between 12 and 50 years old at seven clinics and welcome babies at the Birth Center.
What is a Nurse Midwife?
Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are advanced practice nurses with specialized training and experience in midwifery. They can prescribe medication, perform medical procedures and provide other interventions when medically necessary. CNMs provide:
- prenatal care
- labor and delivery care
- postpartum care
- yearly gynecological exams
- birth control and family planning
- preconception care
- counseling in health care management and disease prevention

We believe that pregnancy is a special time in the life of a family and that birth can be an empowering experience. We believe all expectant mothers have the right to safe, satisfying health care that meets their spiritual and cultural beliefs, values and traditions.
CNMs believe in keeping labor as natural as possible, but are skilled in using interventions when needed to keep mothers and babies safe and healthy. Our Nurse Midwife Unit is located within the Birth Center, giving you access to a full range of services if needed, including anesthesiologists, OB physicians, pediatric services, Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit and lactation services.

The midwives that make up the Nurse Midwife Service at Hennepin Healthcare see patients in traditional clinic settings and deliver babies at the Birth Center at HCMC.
