Paying for your Health Care Services

Hennepin County Medical Center and its clinics are owned and operated by Hennepin County. Most of the money to run them comes from payments for health care services, not from county property taxes. These payments come from patients, or their insurance companies, HMOs, and public programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, MinnesotaCare and General Assistance Medical Care. Persons not on any programs are responsible for paying their own health care bills.

It is very important that you give us accurate information at the time you receive care about how your bill will be paid.

If you have insurance:

We will bill your insurance company. To do this, we need:

  • Name and address of your insurance company
  • Your policy number

Please present your insurance card when you register or check in for your visit. You need to pay for any charges not covered by your insurance, health plan, or public program. For example, you must pay any deductibles, co-pays, or non-covered services. Please ask your insurance company or health plan about your health care coverage.

If you have no insurance or limited coverage:

You will get a bill shortly after your services or visit; the payment will be due within 30 days.

  • If you have no insurance, you may qualify for a Hennepin Care discount, depending on your income.
If the proper information was given at registration, the discount will appear on your bill. If the proper information was not given, please call (612) 873-3073 or 1-800-495-4915 to discuss the discount program.
  • If you think you cannot pay your bill within 30 days, please contact Patient Accounting Customer
Service at (612) 873-3073 right away to talk about payment arrangements.

If you think you qualify for public assistance:

Talk to a staff member when you check in at the clinic.

More about your charges and bill

You have the right to discuss treatment options and costs for services. Please ask your health care provider
if you have concerns or questions about the cost of treatment or services.

You will receive an HCMC bill for the facility portion of your stay or visit, including room and board, lab and
X-ray, surgery and other services. If you are seen by a physician, you may also be billed by Hennepin Faculty Associates (HFA) for professional services.
