Arizant Healthcare donates device to warm hypothermic patients in Latvia
Trans-continental partnership gives "Bair Hugger"

On Thursday, Dec. 27 the Service League of Hennepin County Medical Center will officially thank Arizant Healthcare for their donation of a "Bair Hugger" patient blanket warmer that will be delivered to a hospital in Liepaja, Latvia. A group of Hennepin County Medical Center physicians and staff have traveled to the Baltic region several times to do mission work that includes clinical care, surgery and physician education. As a result of this unique partnership, Latvian physicians also come to Hennepin County Medical Center to observe surgery and critical care techniques. On one such visit, a Latvian physician saw how the Bair Hugger was used to warm patients, and realized how it could save the lives of some patients in Latvia.

"Last year in Liepaja the weather was very cold and some poor people died of hypothermia," explains retired trauma referral coordinator at Hennepin County Medical Center Ruth M. Bekeris, who organizes fundraising and trans-continental travel for the volunteers. "Thanks to generous donations, the Bair Hugger will be shipped overseas by the American Latvian Shipping Line, and will soon be helping save lives in Liepaja and the surrounding area."
