Hennepin County Medical Center has signed a purchase agreement for a block of property in South Minneapolis to build a new medical clinic that will replace the current family medicine clinic on West Lake Street.
"We have been serving this area for more than 25 years, but we do not have the space in our current clinic to meet the changing health care needs of the community," said Lynn Abrahamsen, CEO. "With a new facility we will be able to continue to provide care to families, and we will be able to bring some of our outstanding specialists to South Minneapolis to improve access to care and services in that area.
The potential site of the new clinic is 3 acres of mostly vacant land or unoccupied buildings on Nicollet Avenue, approximately two blocks north of the current clinic location on West Lake Street.
Patients and staff from the current clinic are involved in planning and designing the new facility using Lean process improvement methodology to create a work environment that adds value, in a care setting that serves the patient's needs. The facility will maximize sustainable design features and accessibility.
The new 50,000 square foot building will include a family medicine clinic, room for specialties like sports medicine, urgent care services, and other specialties that meet the needs of current patients and area residents. The facility will also include adequate space for patient education and the Family Medicine residency program.
The Whittier Alliance is working with the hospital to identify neighborhood needs and preferences.
Hennepin County Medical Center is a comprehensive academic medical center and public teaching hospital. A 427-bed acute care hospital and primary care and specialty clinics are located in downtown Minneapolis. Four primary care and family medicine clinics are located in Minneapolis and suburban Hennepin County.
For the eleventh year in a row, Hennepin County Medical Center is listed in the U.S. News & World Report rankings of the top U.S. Hospitals in its annual "America's Best Hospitals" report.
