Special General Mills Volunteers Give Warmth to Newborns at Hennepin County Medical Center
Hennepin County Medical Center is the proud recipient of thousands of hand-made baby caps created by the Knitters in General group from General Mills. In the past, this group has created many hand-knit items such as sweaters, slippers, scarves and oversized specialty mittens for burn victims. The General Mills team of volunteers recently adopted the production of all of the baby caps utilized in the birthing center and newborn intensive care units at Hennepin.

The Birth Center at Hennepin County Medical Center helps bring more than 2,800 babies into the world each year, and will provide a full spectrum of care for mothers and their new babies, which will now include a warm and comforting cap made with love by Knitting in General.

"It is truly amazing the difference the caps makes to these families," says Denise Edstrom, Service League Director. "The families know that there was a special effort made to ensure that their stay at Hennepin County Medical Center was as comfortable as possible."

The Baby Cap Donation Program at Hennepin has been in existence for decades. Often many individuals, classes, community and church groups would contribute to the production of the much needed accessories. Now that Knitting in General has taken ownership of the entire program, the nearly 3,000 babies born each year at Hennepin will be warmed by these hand-made caps knitted especially for them.

Knitting in General was formed in 2004 by General Mills employee volunteers and has donated thousands of hand-made items to Hennepin County Medical Center and other organizations in the Twin Cities. General Mills' mission is to nourish lives in the community by addressing societal needs with breakthrough ideas, championship people and financial resources. Everyday, employees and retirees leverage the company's $82 million in financial contributions to the community by passionately and tirelessly volunteering. According to a recent survey, 78 percent of GMI employees volunteer.

The Hennepin County Medical Center Service League exists to promote and advance the mission of Hennepin County Medical Center and benefits its patients, visitors and staff. Hennepin County Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma Center and public teaching hospital repeatedly recognized as one of America's best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The centerpiece of Hennepin County's clinical health services, Hennepin offers a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient services, including The Birth Center.
