A new Observation and Recovery Unit will open at Hennepin County Medical Center in June – the first project to be completed as part of the $80 million renovation and expansion plan that was approved by the Hennepin County Board last year. The new 15-bed unit will care for patients receiving interventional procedures or patients who are experiencing conditions (like chest pains) requiring further observation to determine if admission to an inpatient area is necessary.
“The completion of this unit is important for Hennepin to achieve its mission by allowing us to provide care to these patients and additional beds for inpatients,” said Chief Executive Officer Lynn Abrahamsen. “In this new unit we will provide high quality care in a state-of-the-art, contemporary setting to patients who require close monitoring, but don’t necessarily need to stay overnight, and we can improve our ability to meet the demand in the community for more inpatient hospital beds.”
Work continues on a new critical care floor that will concentrate inpatient medical and surgical intensive care onto one floor and create more private and semi-private rooms, all part of the first phase of an integrated master facility plan that will also include replacement of the Family Medical Center in South Minneapolis and acquisition of land for a new outpatient clinic and education facility in downtown Minneapolis.
An open house will be held on May 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the Observation and Recovery Unit.
