Hennepin County Medical Center opens second 3D vascular technology suite
Advanced technology improves imaging capabilities, patient experience
Hennepin County Medical Center has added a new, state-of-the-art, flat-detector biplane neuroangiography suite to its imaging and interventional capabilities for diagnosing and treating stroke, carotid artery disease and other vascular disorders. Hennepin has a tradition in leadership in medical imaging, and this new lab configuration features full field of view imaging in both the frontal and lateral planes and a pivoting “biplane” table – the largest and first of its kind in the upper Midwest.

“The new suite, the second neuroangiography suite here at Hennepin is a huge step forward because of several new features that enhance our interventional capabilities,” explains Chip Truwit, MD, Hennepin’s Chief of Radiology. “For patients in need of acute life-saving intervention, the multi-dimensional, high-resolution images captured by this technology are spectacular.”

The new Allura Xper FD20/20 interventional lab from Philips Medical Systems aids in the diagnosis and treatment of a range of patient conditions and is also used for procedures such as diagnostic catheterizations, stenting, balloon angioplasty, vertebroplasty, and embolizations. It’s a fully digital system that enables physicians to capture and view detailed 3D images of a patient’s vascular structure, providing faster and more accurate diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease. The system also has the ability to create “CT-like” images, providing physicians with more diagnostic information than ever before. Equally important, the Allura also exposes patients to less radiation during the actual procedures than other systems.

“Our patients—the people of Hennepin County and the greater Minnesota region—benefit from Hennepin’s technological leadership in this field,” explains Dr. Truwit. “We receive patients with acute traumatic vascular injuries and acute stroke from the local area as well as all over the state. These patients and their families receive the best care available, partly due to technologically innovative equipment such as this suite offers. We can complete a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures faster and safer, and our patients are on their way to recovery and discharge much sooner. We’re very excited about this addition to our imaging services.”

Philips Medical Systems is a world leader in the development, manufacture, distribution and service of diagnostic imaging systems. Philips Medical Systems is a division of Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands.

Hennepin County Medical Center is a nationally recognized Level 1 Trauma Center with the largest emergency department in Minnesota. The comprehensive academic medical center and public teaching hospital includes a 446-bed acute care hospital and primary care and specialty clinics. Hennepin County Medical Center is repeatedly listed in the U.S. News & World Report rankings of the top U.S. Hospitals in its annual “America’s Best Hospitals” report.
