Three board members reappointed to Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. board of directors
Three members of the Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. Board of Directors have been appointed to second terms by the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners. Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. is the subsidiary corporation of Hennepin County that operates Hennepin County Medical Center.

Christopher P. Puto, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Business, University of St. Thomas; Sharon Sayles Belton, Humphrey Institute of Public Policy fellow, GMAC-RFC and former Minneapolis Mayor; and Ray Waldron, President of the Minnesota AFL-CIO will continue their service on the board until Dec. 31, 2011.

The reappointed board members round out a 13-member board that has extensive experience in health care, business, urban community development, workforce development, and philanthropy. The other board members are Jan Malcolm, former Minnesota Commissioner of Health and current Courage Center CEO; David Jones, retired Allina Chief Financial Officer; Anita Pampusch, retired Bush Foundation President; Mark Bernhardson, Bloomington City Manager; Judith Shank, MD, retired President of the Minnesota Medical Association; Atum Azzahir, President and Executive Director of the Powderhorn/Phillips Cultural Wellness Center; Don Jacobs, MD, Chairman and CEO of Hennepin Faculty Associates; Lynn Abrahamsen, CEO of Hennepin County Medical Center; Randy Johnson, Hennepin County Board; and Mike Opat, Hennepin County Board.

The Minnesota Legislature approved a bill in 2005 to create Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc., a public subsidiary corporation owned by Hennepin County, to provide more operational flexibility to the hospital and clinic system. The initial assessment of the need for a new operating entity and original recommendations were made in 2003 by a 14-member citizens task force and refined in 2004 by a smaller citizens committee. The medical center remains a public hospital and the county board retains final and ultimate policy control, including approval of the budget and oversight of the safety net mission.

Hennepin County Medical Center is a nationally recognized Level 1 Trauma Center with the largest emergency department in Minnesota. The comprehensive academic medical center and public teaching hospital includes a 446-bed acute care hospital and primary care and specialty clinics located in downtown Minneapolis, and four primary care clinics in Minneapolis and suburban Hennepin County.

For the twelfth year in a row, Hennepin County Medical Center is listed in the U.S. News & World Report rankings of the top U.S. Hospitals in its annual “America’s Best Hospitals” report.
