Diabetes and Nutrition
Carmelita graduated in 1983 with Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Southwestern University. She received her certification in Nephrology in 1994 and certification in Diabetes in 2009. She started working in HCMC in April of 1991 as a Renal Dialysis Nurse.
Carmelita is a Certified Nephrology Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator in the Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic as well as the Downtown Medicine Clinic. She provides diabetes education and medication management for Type 1 and Type 2 and cares for gestational and pre-diabetes patients, both individually and in group settings.
She enjoys working with patients with diabetes and kidney failure, including patients who have received kidney transplantation. She has worked as a renal educator and as an inpatient diabetes educator at HCMC for 16 years, providing diabetes education and renal education to patients that are admitted to the hospital as well as staff development in diabetes and renal care.
She spends long vacations every other year doing medical-surgical missions with 70-90 International Medical and paramedical groups in the Philippines. She also helps educate patients, families, nursing and medical students on Diabetes and Renal issues.
