Dr. Swanson is a board certified pediatrician trained in infectious diseases and tropical medicine. Dr. Swanson graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1997. He completed residency training in pediatrics at Children's Hospital and Research Center at Oakland, where he served as a chief resident in pediatrics. He was a staff physician hospitalist at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital - Stanford University Hospital from 2002 to 2003. He subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in infectious diseases at Washington University School of Medicine, and served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Dr. Swanson has lived and worked throughout Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. He holds a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (Instituto de Medicina Tropical, Lima, Peru), and has special interests in global health, infectious diseases, pediatric hospital medicine, and medical education.
Dr. Swanson is also a member of the University of Minnesota Center for Global Pediatrics and has won numerous teaching awards. He is active in global health mentorship, and regularly dedicates time to work with and train healthcare providers in Africa or Asia.
Dr. Swanson is the Hennepin County Medical Center Pediatric Inpatient Medical Director. He also provides consultations to adult and pediatric travelers at the Parkside International Travel Medicine Clinic.
