Adolescent Care

The health needs of teens (11 to 21 years old) are different from those of children. Teens with chronic diseases can be faced with special challenges, issues of sexuality and body image can emerge and preventive measures can be essential in addressing mental health issues, the use of chemicals and other potentially destructive behaviors. Hennepin’s Downtown Pediatric Clinic and the Hennepin Clinic in Richfield are sites where Adolescent Clinic is offered.

Breastfeeding

Lactation Consultants provide in-person and over the phone help. A lactation consultant will return your call and help to answer your questions and provide you with information. If a breastfeeding problem is not easily resolved over the phone, an appointment can be arranged for mothers to bring their babies to the clinic. Lactation consultations can be reached at 612-873-8793.

Newborn Intensive Care Unit

The 21-bed Level IIIB Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) provides the highest level of care in a warm and nurturing environment to infants in distress at birth, those requiring close observation, and those transferred from other facilities for treatment of neonatal diseases. Because we are uniquely located within the Birth Center and staffed around the clock, we are available to delivering mothers at a moment's notice.

Physicians lead a team of other providers that help parents of preterm infants, or those in distress, with nutrition, respiratory support, education and assistance in identifying resources to ensure the health of their babies. They monitor the progress of "graduates" of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit so that appropriate early interventions can be done as soon as possible. Developmental screening is performed at each visit and patients are followed in the clinic until they are well enough to be referred to a primary care provider.

Pediatric Emergency Department

Having a seriously ill or injured child can be a frightening experience for parents and children alike. Our Pediatric Emergency Department welcomes children and families into a safe and friendly environment upon their arrival. After a quick evaluation at the front desk by a nurse, families are escorted to one of the 12 pediatric patient rooms. If a room is not immediately available, a waiting room designed with kids in mind is ready for children and families to watch movies, read books and play games until their treatment begins. Special "no-poke" sedation is our specialty and our imaging equipment is new and as "low-dose" as possible.

Children can also be seen on a "first-come, first–served" basis in our Pediatric Outpatient Clinic on the 7th floor of the Red Building during business hours.

The clinic has some extended hours and is open until 8 pm Monday through Thursday and on Saturday mornings from 8 am to 12 pm.
